2013 Wood Racquet Classic
The internationally known fund raiser, recently completed its fifteenth year, continues to benefit the John Wayne Cancer Foundation. The tennis tournament has traditionally been played with wood racquets and vintage tennis attire. This year’s event was once again be held at the Peterson estate in Costa Mesa.
Clay Peterson states, “When we first dreamt this thing up we knew it had the potential to become an annual event. I’m proud that we are fifteen years and going strong. Its always been a super fun day where tournament proceeds are donated to the efforts in fighting cancer in memory of my mother, Sally Peterson.”
In 2006, the tournament partnered with longtime participant and friend Shane Baum, who offered his company, Baumvision International, to co-sponsor the event. Baumvision is an Orange County based eyewear company that designs and distributes products for another O.C. based company, Paul Frank Industries. Baum’s new signature eyewear brand, Leisure Society, is underwriting the event this year. All of the tournament’s proceeds were be donated to the John Wayne Cancer Foundation.
“The Wood Racquet Invitational epitomizes Southern California’s diverse culture,” says Shane Baum. “Only in this part of the world can you combine age and youth, wealth, class, celebrity, musicians, nerds, artist, indie rockers and all sort of athletes sharing a common sense of community and philanthropy. Most dressed in short shorts and other tennis kitsch themes. For those in the know (and on the invite list), this is the not to be missed event of the summer season.”
Over the years the tournament has raised over $120,000 for cancer research.
