Restrained sophistication is the hallmark of many a luxury hotel, so the animated chatter and upbeat music at Salon de Ning comes as quite a surprise. It’s just gone 6pm on a Saturday and the rooftop bar is already at capacity, with patrons – a mixture of locals and guests – enjoying the evening sunshine. 

Perched on the 23rd floor of The Peninsula New York, above the bustle of Fifth Avenue, the open-air bar and terrace is one of the most poorly kept secrets in this very well-to-do stretch of Midtown, with an ambiance that’s distinctly different from that found elsewhere in the hotel.
