Santorini’s views aren’t always spoiled by crowds – you just need to know where to go

By John O’Ceallaigh

There’s no sunset like a Santorini sunset. That’s not because of its undeniable beauty: wonderful though it is to see the blazing sun turn the sky pink-gold and the ocean molten, there are plenty of seaside settings around the world that allow for similarly impressive views. No, the real phenomenon is not the sunset itself but the mania that surrounds it.

Shimmy through the packed lanes of the quaint little town of Oia at dusk in summer and you’ll eventually squeeze on to a tiered hillside overwhelmed by seemingly thousands of honeymooners and that day’s cruise ship tour-group cargo.
